Pickerel Frog

  • They are found in woodland streams or grassy fields.

  • The frogs eat insects, but the tadpoles are herbivorous.

  • They have dark brown spots in two rows down the back.

  • There is a bright yellow colour on the inside of the thighs.

  • The females lay egg masses attached to branches in ponds.

  • They are nocturnal.

  • In October, they burrow into sediments at the bottom of ponds and streams and hibernate there for the winter.

  • They can produce toxic skin secretions that are irritating to humans, but which can also be fatal to predators.

  • The population can decline due to habitat destruction.
